For some guest spots I'm doing next week we're ranking the champions of college football of the 00's. Here's my list, tell me what you guys think.
10. 2007 LSU-Lost to UK & Ark in OT. Lucky to have even gotten the chance to play for the Title but to their credit they got it done in dominating fashion. At no point during that season except for in the Title Game did they look like champions.
9. 2003 LSU-Well coached team loaded with NFL talent yet lost to Florida at home & never looked dominant until the SEC Title Game & the Sugar Bowl. Co-Nat'l Champs with USC.
8. 2006 Florida-Again quite fortunate to have even got to play for the Title. USC choked away their chances by losing to UCLA in the last week of the season which opened the door for UF. Good team butm definitely not great. Couldn't even beat Auburn.
7. 2002 Ohio State-Will forever probably be the one of the most underrated championship teams of all time. This was a d**n good team that lived life on the edge. Spent the whole season in defending champ Miami's shadow & then beat the Canes in a thriller. The biggest stigma against the win was a controversial Pass Interference Call late in the game that allowed the Bucks to force OT.
6. 2000 Oklahoma-I certainly thought this would be just the first of many titles for Bob Stoops. Sad thing is, as good as this team was they are probably only his 4th best Oklahoma team. But this one got it done with Josh Heupel & Co. & dominated defending champ Florida State for the Title. This team dominated the Big 12 that year & was very, very strong.
5. 2009 Alabama-As complete a team as I've ever seen. Well coached, solid offensively & featured a Heisman Winner, dominating defensively & they had big time playmakers in the Special Teams. This team impressed me the most by putting together their 2 best performances in the Conf. Title Game & the Nat'l Title Game. Did not impress me in squeaking by Tennessee & Auburn, granted their 2 biggest rivals but horribly average teams. To the Tide's credit though the game winning drive against Auburn was well-earned, well-deserved & sure to be legendary.
4. 2008 Florida-I nearly put 09 Bama here as they smoked pretty much the same UF team who had won it all the year before. However 09 UF to me will go down as one of the biggest disapointments in recent sports memory because of how dominant they could have been. UF didnt have quite the firepower in the WR corps as 08 but still they should have been better. 08 UF dominated everyone-except Ole Miss-& looked brilliant in destroying quality foes like UGA. They were equally impressive in the SEC Title Game downing Alabama & especially superb in the Nat'l Title game slowing down & beating mighty Oklahoma. That team could do it all.
3. 2005 Texas-Spent all season as #2 to one of the most dominant teams of all time-2005 USC-but when it mattered Texas was brilliant in the clutch winning it all at the Rose Bowl. Lost in that one game though was how dominant the Horns were all year save for the Oklahoma State game which still was impressive considering their comeback. This was a great team, one of the best I've ever seen.
2. 2001 Miami-Most people call me crazy for this selection. I think the Canes of 01 are maybe the best of all time with their domi9nating performances & NFL type talent at every position. I still cannot forget how they needed a fluke tuenover to beat an average Boston College team though. But this team was incredible. Remember all the hoopla over Nebraska getting to play the Canes for all the marbles even though they didn't even play in the Big 12 Title Game? Didn't matter, Miami destroyed them.
1. 2004 USC-Auburn Fans will cry for centuries about how they would have liked a shot at USC. I'm not one of them. That team was loaded (though maybe not even the best USC team of the deacade) & ran roughshod through their schedule & got better as the season wore on. Most importantly they utterly trashed #2 Oklahoma, an equally dominant team, 55-19 in the Orange Bowl which is still the biggest thrashing in BCS history.
